I devoured the print version cover to cover but recently discovered the audiobook narrated by Richard Matthews. Let me tell you, listening along makes the experience about a hundred times better. Matthews brings Bryson’s prose to life with such enthusiasm and flair, it’s like the two of them are yarning with you by the campfire.

The level of detail Bryson goes into about all kinds of science is mind-blowing. One minute you’re learning about how plate tectonics shaped the Earth’s geography. The next, he’s diving deep into the intricacies of DNA and evolution. It’s like getting a personal tour of the natural world from the most intelligent, funniest guy in it.

What really stuck with me are the portraits Bryson paints of history’s greatest scientists. You’ll feel like you’re right there in the lab with Newton as he discovers the laws of gravity or tagging along on Darwin’s famous voyage on The Beagle. Pasteur, Einstein, Curie – these pioneers leap off the page as real people you just want to buy a drink for and hear more stories from.
